You Know You’re on Eluthera When

You know you’re in

the carribean,

when there are

three cupboards

full of glasses:

tumblers,

juice glasses,

wine glasses,

margarita glasses,

water glasses.

And a total of six cups.

No need for heat here-

the sun and

warm hearts

provide it.

No need for coffee here

island time

no hurries

no worries

mon.

Just smiles

and open hearts.

Freeing the Wild Tiger

The wild tiger in each of us

dresses in sheep’s clothing

continually bringing

ourselves to heel.

Zorba the Greek

refused his sheep coat

and danced his wildness.

Gandhi marched with dignity,

a wild tiger focused on

freedom and independence.

Martin Luther King Jr’s

wild tiger spoke

so eloquently of it’s dream.

And we,

each of us,

after a lifetime of training to heel,

must find and free

that wild tiger

in order to find joy

and ironically

peace.

The Condor

The condor soars high,

killing nothing,

yet living by eating

that is already dead.

Consuming the past

what is no longer alive.

We humans purify our lives

by allowing ourselves

to consume and digest

the story, our history

of who we were,

of places we’ve

loved and rooted

and accomplishments we’ve crowed.

In order to fly

high and clear

and free

and be all that

we can be.
